Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 21 Feb 2003 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 indicates that, according to S. Galen Smith (The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1] co-author for Scirpus), in Flora North America Vol. 23:30 (2003), the basionym for Trichophorum pumilum is Scirpus pumilus, published by Martin Vahl (Vahl in Authors of Plant Names) in Enum. Pl. 2:243 (1805). [Author citation corrected to Trichophorum pumilum (Vahl) Schinz & Thell., from Trichophorum pumilum (J. Vahl) Schinz & Thell. originally in this Index, 7 Mar 2003.]
Correspondence 2 14 Jul 2006 Interchange Feedback from Galen Smith see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 Correspondence 2 indicates, according to Galen Smith (co-author of Scirpus and Trichophorum for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2]): that Scirpus pumilus and Trichophorum [Scirpus] clementis definitely should be placed in Trichophorum following Flora North America vol. 23, 2002, which reflects the dismemberment of the old polyphyletic genus Scirpus by taxonomists world-wide; that his opinion is based on the judgement of the main world experts on generic delimitation in Cyperaceae as well as on his own studies; and that he thinks that Trichophorum as presently defined may be polyphyletic, but that the only North American species that may not belong in Trichophorum are Trichophorum clintonii and Trichophorum planifolium, which grow in dry habitats, unlike all of the rest of the North American species, which are wetland obligates and very similar in morphology.
Correspondence 3 Treatment and author notes submitted for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] by S. Galen Smith see Comment 3
Editorial Comments 3 Correspondence 3 indicates that for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] Scirpus pumilus Vahl is to be treated as a synonym of Trichophorum pumilum (Vahl) Schinz & Thell..
