Correspondence 1 cites a paper (Chen, C. J., M. G. Mendenhall, & B. L. Turner. Taxonomy of Thermopsis (Fabaceae) in North America. Ann. Missouri Bot. Gard. 81:714-742. 1994) in which four species of Thermopsis are recognized in CA, including Thermopsis macrophylla Hook. & Arn. and Thermopsis gracilis Howell, each with no infraspecific taxa, and in which Thermopsis macrophylla Hook. & Arn. var. venosa (Eastw.) Isely is treated as a synonym of Thermopsis gracilis Howell

Editorial Comments 2
|
Correspondence 2 indicates that Thermopsis gracilis Howell var. ovata (B. L. Rob. ex Piper) M. Mendenhall, [based on Thermopsis montana Nutt. subsp. ovata B. L. Rob ex Piper], was published in Phytologia 76(5): 383. 1994. [As Thermopsis montana Nutt. ex Torr. & A. Gray var. ovata (B. L. Rob. ex Piper) St. John, this taxon was indicated by Chen, et al. (1994) to occur no closer to California than east-central OR, so that if infraspecific taxa were to be recognized in Thermopsis gracilis, evidently only Thermopsis gracilis var. gracilis would be represented in CA.]
