Information from the Index of California Plant Names (ICPN)
Initial Editorial Analysis Nov 1 2001
Source of Report for California The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1]
Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 17 May 2007 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 indicates that Thalictrum fendleri was published by Asa Gray (A. Gray in Authors of Plant Names) in Memoirs of the American Academy of Arts and Science, new series 4(1): 5. 1849, and that Gray ascribed the name to "Engelm. Mss." but provided his own Latin description. [Therefore, author citation expanded to Thalictrum fendleri Engelm. ex A. Gray, from Thalictrum fendleri A. Gray previously in this Index, 17 May 2007.]
Correspondence 2 23 Mar 2022 e-mail from Bruce Baldwin, including forwarded emails from John Strother and Kanchi Gandhi see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 Correspondence 2 indicates that, as pointed out by Gandhi, although Gray did in fact ascribe the name to Engelmann [as "Thalictrum Fendleri (Engelm. Mss.)"], Gray also stated that "Several families of the ensuing enumeration, such as the Cactaceae, Cuscutineae, Asclepiadeae, Euphorbiacese, &c, have been elaborated by Dr. Engelmann, of St. Louis, upon whom a large share of the labor and care incident to this enterprise has fallen. His name is affixed to the portions, as well as to various notes, thus contributed by him.", thus establishing Engelmann as the publishing author, so that this is an "in" rather than an "ex" situation, although the "in" is optional. [Therefore, author citation corrected to Thalictrum fendleri Engelm. in A. Gray, from Thalictrum fendleri Engelm. ex A. Gray previously in this Index, 31 Mar 2022.]
