Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 11 Apr 2005 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 indicates that Scott D. Sundberg (S. D. Sundb. in Authors of Plant Names) published Symphyotrichum subulatum (Michx.) G. L. Nesom var. ligulatum (Shinners) S. D. Sundb. (with Aster subulatus var. ligulatus and Symphyotrichum divaricatum as synonyms) in SIDA 21:907 (2004), indicating a possible name change of Symphyotrichum divaricatum to Symphyotrichum subulatum var. ligulatum pending decision by The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] Author.
Correspondence 2 Treatment and author notes submitted for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] by Geraldine A. Allen see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 Correspondence 2 indicates that for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] Symphyotrichum subulatum (Michx.) G. L. Nesom is to be recognized for CA, with only one of five recognized varieties, Symphyotrichum subulatum (Michx.) G. L. Nesom var. parviflorum (Shinners) S. D. Sundb., indicated for CA, and with Aster subulatus Michx. var. cubensis (DC.) Shinners, Symphyotrichum expansum (Spreng.) G.L. Nesom listed as syns; Correspondence 2 also indicates that California material previously referred to Symphyotrichum subulatum (Michx.) G. L. Nesom var. ligulatum (Shinners) S. D. Sundb. [Aster subulatus Michx. var. ligulatus Shinners in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1]] belongs instead to Symphyotrichum subulatum (Michx.) G. L. Nesom var. parviflorum (Shinners) S. D. Sundb..
Correspondence 3 13 Aug 2007 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 3
Editorial Comments 3 Correspondence 3 indicates: that Symphyotrichum subulatum var. parviflorum was published by S. D. Sundb. (S.D. Sundb. in Authors of Plant Names) in Sida 21(2): 907. 2004; that the basionym, Tripolium subulatum var. parviflorum, was published by Nees in Genera et Species Asterearum 157, 286. 1833; and that the ascription of the basionym to Shinners is an error probably [or possibly] resulting from Correspondence 1, which applies to Symphyotrichum subulatum var. ligulatum (Shinners) S.D. Sundb. and not var. parviflorum. [Therefore, author citation corrected to Symphyotrichum subulatum (Michx.) G. L. Nesom var. parviflorum (Nees) S. D. Sundb., from Symphyotrichum subulatum (Michx.) G. L. Nesom var. parviflorum (Shinners) S. D. Sundb. previously in this Index, 15 Aug 2007.]
Correspondence 4 18 Sep 2007 e-mail from John Strother see Comment 4
Editorial Comments 4 Correspondence 4 indicates that plants treated in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1] as Aster subulatus var. ligulatus are treated in Flora North America as either Symphyotrichum subulatum var. elongatum or Symphyotrichum subulatum var. parviflorum, and that Strother referred all material of Symphyotrichum subulatum in UC/JEPS to Symphyotrichum subulatum (Michaux) G. L. Nesom var. parviflorum (Nees) S. D. Sundberg, and not to Symphyotrichum subulatum var. ligulatum, which he had erroneously reported earlier, and not to Symphyotrichum subulatum var. elongatum.
