Notes on Publication of Name | Fl. Novo-Galiciana 5: 695. 1987.
Source of Report for California | The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1], as cited in Kartesz & Meacham
Initial Editorial Comments | in no way mentioned in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1] (despite Kartesz & Meacham citation); Sesbania exaltata, recognized in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1], listed as synonym of Sesbania herbacea in Kartesz & Meacham; evidently treated as Sesbania exaltata in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1].

Editorial Comments 1 | 15 Aug 2002: McVaugh, in protolog, listed "?Darwinia exaltata (Raf.) F. Ludov. 106. 1817" as a syn, and stated "the type of D. exaltata is unknown but was presumably from Louisiana." Isely evidently did not address Sesbania herbacea in his treatment for the "Vascular Flora of the Southeastern United States" (1990), the coverage of which includes Louisiana, or in "Native and Naturalized Leguminosae...of the United States..." (1998). If Sesbania herbacea and Sesbania exaltata are considered synonymous, the correct name for the taxon would be Sesbania herbacea, since it is based on Darwinia exaltata, a name having priority over Sesbania exaltata according to Art. 11.4 of ICBN (St. Louis Code), which states, in part, "For any taxon below the rank of genus, the correct name is the combination of the final epithet of the earliest legitimate name of the taxon in the same rank, with the correct name of the genus or species to which it is assigned..." Thus, Sesbania herbacea might be the correct name for the taxon called Sesbania exaltata in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1].

Editorial Comments 2 | 19 Aug 2002: In revising the treatment of Sesbania in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1] for Jepson Flora Project, I have determined that all material in UC/JEPS filed as Sesbania exaltata fits McVaugh's description of Sesbania herbacea. This, taken together with McVaugh's position and Isely's failure to address the issue, has lead me to treat the names as synonymous, and to apply Sesbania herbacea to the plants in CA.
