Initial Editorial Analysis 11 Nov 2009
Source of Report for California The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1]

Editorial Recommendation author citation to be checked [resolved]
Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 24 Jul 2008 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 indicates that Sanguisorba minor ssp. muricata was published by John Briquet (Briq. in Authors of Plant Names) in Prodrome de la Flore Corse 2(1):209 (1913), based on Poterium sanguisorba L. subsp. muricatum published by G. Rouy & E.-G. Camus (Rouy & E.G. Camus in Authors of Plant Names) in Flore de France 6:435 (1900), and that the supposed Spach basionym, Poterium muricatum, was illegitimate, and that Nordborg, in 1966, simply listed the trinomial which had been published earlier. [Therefore, author citation corrected to Sanguisorba minor Scop. subsp. muricata (Rouy & E.G. Camus) Briq., from Sanguisorba minor Scop. subsp. muricata Briq. previously in this Index, 12 Sep 2008.]
Correspondence 2 13 May 2009 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse, including forwarded e-mail of 13 May 2009 from Kanchi Gandhi see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 Correspondence 2 indicates that new information has been provided by Kanchi Gandhi regarding Poterium sanguisorba subsp. muricatum, the basionym of Sanguisorba minor ssp. muricata: the basionym was published before the 1900 Rouy & Camus publication by Gaston Bonnier & Georges de Layens (Bonnier & Layens in Authors of Plant Names) in Tableux Synoptiques des Plantes Vasculaires de la Flore de la France 102 (1894); the Rouy & Camus name is an isonym; the correct citation is Sanguisorba minor subsp. muricata (Bonnier & Layens) Briq.; a detailed explanation of the way to interpret what was by Bonnier & Layens an unusual format for presenting names of subspecies [i.e., as species names, under other species names] was also provided by Gandhi. [Therefore, author citation corrected to Sanguisorba minor Scop. subsp. muricata (Bonnier & Layens) Briq., from Sanguisorba minor Scop. subsp. muricata (Rouy & E.G. Camus) Briq. previously in this Index, 11 Nov 2009.]
Correspondence 3 Treatment and author notes submitted for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] by Daniel Potter see Comment 3
Editorial Comments 3 Correspondence 3 indicates, without explanation, that for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] Sanguisorba minor Scop. subsp. muricata (Bonnier & Layens) Briq. is to be treated as a synonym of Poterium sanguisorba L.
