Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 Treatment submitted for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] by Charles D. Bell see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 indicates that for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2], Sambucus mexicana C. Presl ex DC. [treated as synonym of Sambucus nigra L. subsp. canadensis (L.) Bolli by Bolli, who indicated the latter no nearer to California than sw Texas] is to be treated as having been misapplied to pls in California belonging instead to Sambucus nigra L. subsp. caerulea Bolli. [Epithet spelled "cerulea" by Bolli, which may be an automatically correctable error in that "caeruleus" means blue, possibly in reference to the fr.]
Correspondence 2 11 Feb 2014 e-mail from Bruce Baldwin (attachment) see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 Correspondence 2 indicates that Sambucus nigra L. subsp. caerulea (Raf.) Bolli isn't closely related to Sambucus nigra L. s.s. and needs to be recognized as a separate spp. (Sambucus caerulea Raf.) according to phylogenetic work (Eriksson & Donoghue 1997 Syst. Bot. 22: 555--573).
Correspondence 3 Treatment and author notes submitted for Revision 10 of the Jepson eFlora, as well as 11 May 2022 e-mail from Bruce Baldwin see Comment 3
Editorial Comments 3 Correspondence 3 indicates that, according Whittemore [Journal of the Botanical Research Institute of Texas 12(1): 69-73. 2018], Presl's original material [on which Sambucus mexicana C. Presl ex DC. is based] matches plants from the area around Monterey, California, and clearly differs from Sambucus taxa in other parts of North America, and that the name Sambucus mexicana C. Presl ex DC., a name that has priority over Sambucus nigra L. subsp. caerulea (Raf.) Bolli, is to be used for this taxon (but not for plants from central Mexico to which it has been applied).
