Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 6 Mar 2009 e-mail from Dick Moe see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 indicates that Barbara [Ertter; author of genus for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1], The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2]] has annotated specimens as Rosa woodsii subsp. gratissima, and that ICPN [this Index] has only Rosa woodsii var. gratissima. [Rosa woodsii Lindl. var. glabrata (Parish) D. Cole and Rosa woodsii Lindl. var. gratissima (Greene) D. Cole treated as synonyms of Rosa woodsii Lindl. var. ultramontana (S. Watson) Jeps. in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1]; status of Rosa woodsii Lindl. var. glabrata (Parish) D. Cole as yet unclear for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2].]
Correspondence 2 Treatment and author notes submitted for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] by Barbara Ertter see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 Correspondence 2 indicates that for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] Rosa woodsii Lindl. subsp. gratissima (Greene) W. H. Lewis & Ertter is to be recognized and treated as native to CA, with Rosa woodsii var. gratissima (Greene) D. Cole listed as syn, and with a note indicating that "subglabrous populations at n base SnBr are Rosa woodsii subsp. gratissima var. glabrata (Parish) D. Cole", which sounds like it is recognized taxonomically by the author, although the fact it is not otherwise treated suggests the opposite.
Correspondence 3 Treatment and author notes submitted since The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] by Barbara Ertter see Comment 3
Editorial Comments 3 Correspondence 3 indicates that for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] Rosa woodsii Lindl. var. glabrata (Parish) D. Cole and Rosa woodsii Lindl. var. gratissima (Greene) D. Cole should have been but were not recognized and treated as being native to California and as belonging to Rosa woodsii Lindl. subsp. gratissima (Greene) W. H. Lewis & Ertter.
