A. Barkley, Rhus trilobata Nutt. var. trilobata, and others are to be treated as synonyms of Rhus aromatica Aiton.
Correspondence 2 | 11 Feb 2014 e-mail from Bruce Baldwin (attachment) see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 | Correspondence 2 indicates that, based on molecular, phylogenetic evidence (Yi et al. 2007 Syst. Bot. 32(2)379-391), Baldwin thinks that Rhus trilobata Nutt. (1838) should still be used [it had been used in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1]] for western skunkbrush, instead of Rhus aromatica Aiton (1789) [which was used in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2]], although it does constitute a clade with Rhus aromatica, so that the treatment in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] is not completely indefensible.
