Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 Treatment and author notes submitted for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] by John M. Miller see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 indicates that for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] Rhus trilobata Nutt., Rhus trilobata Nutt. var. anisophylla (Greene) Jeps., Rhus trilobata Nutt. var. quinata Jeps., Rhus trilobata Nutt. var. simplicifolia (Greene) F. A. Barkley, Rhus trilobata Nutt. var. trilobata, and others are to be treated as synonyms of Rhus aromatica Aiton.
Correspondence 2 11 Feb 2014 e-mail from Bruce Baldwin (attachment) see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 Correspondence 2 indicates that, based on molecular, phylogenetic evidence (Yi et al. 2007 Syst. Bot. 32(2)379-391), Baldwin thinks that Rhus trilobata Nutt. (1838) should still be used [it had been used in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1]] for western skunkbrush, instead of Rhus aromatica Aiton (1789) [which was used in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2]], although it does constitute a clade with Rhus aromatica, so that the treatment in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] is not completely indefensible.
Pending data Rhus trilobata Nutt. may become the accepted name for Rhus aromatica Aiton
