Initial Editorial Analysis 2 Apr 2010
Source of Report for California Munz, P.A. in collaboration with D. D. Keck. 1968, as cited in Kartesz & Meacham

Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 Treatment and author notes submitted for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] by Kathleen A. Kron & Walter S. Judd see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 does not address Rhododendron occidentale (Torr. & A. Gray) A. Gray var. paludosum Jeps., so that a Current Status of unresolved is most appropriate at this time.
Correspondence 2 29 Sep 2012 e-mail from Richard Moe see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 Correspondence 2 includes reference to a study (Madrono 59(3): 140. 2012) in which evidence from morphology as well as isoenzymes was used to support a taxonomy in which Rhododendron occidentale (Torr. & A. Gray) A. Gray var. californicum (Torr. & A. Gray) Hrusa (as a new combination) as well as Rhododendron occidentale (Torr. & A. Gray) A. Gray var. occidentale and Rhododendron occidentale (Torr. & A. Gray) A. Gray var. paludosum Jeps. also are recognized, and Rhododendron occidentale (Torr. & A. Gray) A. Gray var. sonomense (Greene) Rehd. is treated as a synonym of Rhododendron occidentale (Torr. & A. Gray) A. Gray var. occidentale.
Pending data Rhododendron occidentale (Torr. & A. Gray) A. Gray var. paludosum Jeps. may become the accepted name for an infraspecific taxon in Rhododendron occidentale (Torr. & A. Gray) A. Gray
