(1984), and that the basionym, Polygonum spergulariiforme, was published by John K. Small (Small in Authors of Plant Names) in Bulletin of the Torrey Botanical Club 19:366 (1892), wherein Small ascribed the name to Meisner (Meisn. in Authors of Plant Names) and, without providing a description himself, provided a valid reference to an earlier description published by Meisner under the name Polygonum coarctatum (an illegitimate later homonym), thereby satisfying the requirements for valid publication.
