Phyla caespitosa (Rusby) Moldenke
VERBENACEAE
·

Information from the Index of California Plant Names (ICPN)
Initial Editorial Analysis 26 May 2011
Source of Report for California added manually by Rosatti, based on Correspondence 1
Initial Editorial Comments in no way mentioned in Abrams & Ferris, Illustrated Flora of the Pacific States, Munz, Munz Supplement, The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1], Kartesz & Meacham; possibly a replacement name for Lippia nodiflora var. rosea (treated as minor variant of Phyla nodiflora var. nodiflora in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1])
Editorial Recommendation new name or combination possibly needed
Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 e-mail from Dick Moe see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 indicates that specimens previously filed as Phyla nodiflora are now filed as Phyla caespitosa (taxon not in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1]), on the authority of Kathryn Kennedy, with reference also to Lippia nodiflora var. rosea.
Correspondence 2 $ 11 Mar 2002 e-mail from Margriet Wetherwax see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 Correspondence 2 indicates that, according to Dieter H. Wilken, The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1] author, Phyla cespitosa is the correct name for what has been called Lippia nodiflora var. rosea, which apparently was never transferred to Phyla at the infraspecific level. [Lippia nodiflora var. rosea (D. Don) Munz was treated as a minor variant of Phyla nodiflora var. nodiflora in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1], as "widely naturalized from S. Am"; Phyla caespitosa (Rusby) Moldenke instead of Lippia nodiflora var. rosea (D. Don) Munz was so treated in TJDM.]
Correspondence 3 Treatment and author notes submitted for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] by Dieter H. Wilken see Comment 3
Editorial Comments 3 Correspondence 3 evidently does not address Phyla caespitosa (Rusby) Moldenke. [However, if Phyla cespitosa in fact is the correct name for what has been called Lippia nodiflora (L.) Michx. var. rosea (D. Don) Munz, as indicated by Wilken in Correspondence 2, and if Lippia nodiflora (L.) Michx. var. rosea (D. Don) Munz is to be treated as a synonym of Phyla nodiflora (L.) Greene, as it is in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2], then for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] Phyla caespitosa (Rusby) Moldenke must also be treated as a synonym of Phyla nodiflora (L.) Greene.
