Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 1 Oct 2007 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 indicates that Phragmites australis subsp. berlandieri (E. Fourn.) Saltonstall & Hauber was published in J. Bot. Res. Inst. Texas 1:387 (2007), that these authors apply this name to a native "Gulf Coast lineage" which they separate from Phragmites australis subsp. americanus and indicate as occurring in extreme s CA, and that these authors have not assigned an infraspecific name for the introduced lineage they also distinguish and report for CA.
Correspondence 2 Treatment and author notes submitted for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 Correspondence 2 indicates, in a note under Phragmites australis (Cav.) Steud., that 3 different genetic lineages may occur in CA, including 2 native ones, Phragmites australis (Cav.) Steud. subsp. americanus Saltonstall, P. M. Peterson, & Soreng and Phragmites australis (Cav.) Steud. subsp. berlandieri (E. Fourn.) Saltonstall & Hauber, and a third, naturalized one "whose taxonomic identity has yet to be determined [Saltonstall & Hauber 2007 J Bot Res Inst Texas 1:385--388]"; even more confusingly, Phragmites australis (Cav.) Steud. subsp. berlandieri (E. Fourn.) Saltonstall & Hauber is also listed as a synonym [Because Phragmites australis (Cav.) Steud. subsp. americanus Saltonstall, P. M. Peterson, & Soreng and Phragmites australis (Cav.) Steud. subsp. berlandieri (E. Fourn.) Saltonstall & Hauber are not formally treated in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2], it is assumed that they are regarded as unresolved variants (if not syns, see foregoing), of Phragmites australis (Cav.) Steud., for which the matter of taxonomic recognition or not requires further study, and therefore remains unresolved.]
