Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 25 May 2004 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 indicates that Job Kuijt, in Monograph of Phoradendron (Viscaceae), Systematic Botany Monographs 66:423--424 (2003), includes Phoradendron villosum as a synonym of Phoradendron serotinum (Raf.) M. C. Johnst. subsp. tomentosum (DC.) Kuijt.
Correspondence 2 Treatment submitted for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] by Job Kuijt see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 Correspondence 2 indicates that for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] Phoradendron flavescens (Pursh) Nutt. ex A. Gray var. villosum (Nutt.) Engelm. [indicated in the ms for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] with "flavens ["flavescens"]" in the position of the species epithet in the name] and Phoradendron villosum (Nutt.) Engelm. are to be treated as synonyms of Phoradendron serotinum (Raf.) M. C. Johnst. subsp. tomentosum (DC.) Kuijt.
Correspondence 3 17 Jun 12 e-mail from Job Kuijt, author of genus for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] see Comment 3
Editorial Comments 3 Correspondence 3 cites a paper by Abbot & Thompson (JBRIT 5(1):139--141. 2011) in which it is stated that Phoradendron leucarpum (Raf.) Reveal & M. C. Johnst. is the correct name for what is called Phoradendron serotinum (Raf.) M. C. Johnst. in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2], as established by Reveal & Johnston (Taxon 38:107-108. 1989), who stated that the Committee for Spermatophyta had voted that the name "Phoradendron leucarpum" should not be treated as a homonym of "Phoradendron leucocarpum", thereby rendering Phoradendron serotinum (Raf.) M. C. Johnst. [superfluous and] incorrect [in transferring Viscum leucarpum Raf. to Phoradendron, Johnston argued that the epithet "leucarpum' should not be used because it could be confused with "leucocarpum" as used in Phoradendron leucocarpum Pacz., a Peruvian species, and so used "serotinum" instead (from Viscum serotinum Raf.), but the Committee for Spermatophyta did not agree, a majority voting that they were not confusable, thus rendering Phoradendron serotinum (Raf.) M. C. Johnst. superfluous and incorrect, and clearing the way for Phoradendron leucarpum (Raf.) Reveal & M. C. Johnst.]. Abbot & Thompson also stated that they accepted the entities and ranks as defined by Kuijt within Phoradendron serotinum (Raf.) M. C. Johnst., and went on to make the necessary combinations within Phoradendron leucarpum (Raf.) Reveal & M. C. Johnst. for them, which for California include Phoradendron leucarpum (Raf.) Reveal & M. C. Johnst. subsp. macrophyllum (Engelm.) Abbott & Thompson and Phoradendron leucarpum (Raf.) Reveal & M. C. Johnst. subsp. tomentosum (DC.) Abbott & Thompson, for Phoradendron serotinum (Raf.) M. C. Johnst. subsp. macrophyllum (Engelm.) Kuijt and Phoradendron serotinum (Raf.) M. C. Johnst. subsp. tomentosum (DC.) Kuijt, respectively.
