Initial Editorial Comments author citation Engelm. in K, but Engelm. ex A. Gray in Kartesz & Meacham, International Plant Names Index-Index Kewensis, so evidently correct as cited
Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 2 Feb 2004 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 indicates that Phoradendron juniperinum was first validly published by Asa Gray (Mem. Amer. Acad. Arts, ser 2, 4:58.1849), who explained that the genus name Phoradendron was at that time unknown to Dr. Engelmann, and so Gray did not attribute his combinations in Phoradendron to Engelmann. [Therefore, A. Gray, as cited above, is correct, and both Engelm. and Engelm. ex A. Gray, as considered under Comments, are incorrect.]
Correspondence 2 25 May 2004 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 Correspondence 2 indicates that Job Kuijt, in Monograph of Phoradendron (Viscaceae), Systematic Botany Monographs 66:249--251 (2003), includes Phoradendron libocedri as a synonym of Phoradendron juniperinum with no infraspecific taxa, based on morphological similarities and lack of experimental data indicating host specificity, although Delbert Wiens and Frank Hawksworth (The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1] Co-Authors), in Aliso 21:35 (2002), had earlier reiterated their taxonomic treatment in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1] (in which the two are treated as distinct species).
Correspondence 3 25 May 2004 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 3
Editorial Comments 3 Correspondence 3 indicates that Delbert Wiens and Frank Hawksworth (The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1] Co-Authors), in Aliso 21:36 (2002), report that Cupressus bakeri in California is a rare host of Phoradendron juniperinum.
Correspondence 4 Treatment submitted for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] by Job Kuijt see Comment 4
Editorial Comments 4 Correspondence 4 indicates that for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] Phoradendron juniperinum var. ligatum (Trel.) Fosberg and Phoradendron libocedri (Engelm.) Howell are to be treated as synonyms of Phoradendron juniperinum A. Gray.
