Notes on Publication of Name J. Acad. Nat. Sci. Philadelphia n.s. 7: 41. 1834 [Not seen; J. Acad. Nat. Sci. Philadelphia Ser. 2. Volume 7 was published in 1869, and does not include this protologue, on p. 41 or anywhere.]
Source of Report for California The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1]3P
Initial Editorial Comments Phlox caespitosa subsp. pulvinata Wherry, only, treated in Munz, in turn treated as Phlox pulvinata (Wherry) Cronquist in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1]; Phlox caespitosa var. rigida (Benth.) listed as synonym of Phlox douglasii Hook. subsp. rigida (Benth.) Wherry in Munz, which in turn is treated as such in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1], but changed to Phlox cespitosa in the Jepson Globe, Wilken & Wetherwax, Corrections to The Jepson Manual ("Correct Phlox douglasii subsp. rigida to P. cespitosa Nutt.")
Variant Spelling Phlox cespitosa
Editorial Recommendation spelling of epithet to be checked [resolved]
Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 23 Apr 2003 e-mail from Margriet Wetherwax see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 indicates that, according toThe Jepson Manual [Ed. 1] author Dieter Wilken, "Either spelling is correct [caespitosa, cespitosa], but ICBN permits correction to the preferred Latin spelling, which is cespitosa." [ICBN, 1994, Art. 60.1, Ex. 1, indicates only that "Scirpus cespitosus L. (1753) is not to be altered to 'S. caespitosus'", evidently because "cespitosus" is the "original spelling" and is to be retained since it is not a typographical or orthographic error; the original spelling in this case is uncertain, as I have not seen protologue (see Notes on Publication of Name), but "caespitosa" is used in International Plant Names Index-Gray Card Index, IPNI-Index Kewensis, and many other places (see foregoing), and is adopted in this Index until evidence to the contrary is presented; spelling of epithet corrected to "caespitosa, from "cespitosa" previously in this Index, 11 Aug 03.]
Correspondence 2 10 Dec 2004 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 Correspondence 2 indicates that in the protologue for Phlox caespitosa Nutt. (J. Acad. Nat. Sci. Phila. 7:41. 1834), the epithet is spelled "cçspitosa" (with a ligature), which must be retained -- with the ligature separated -- to give "caespitosa" according to ICBN 2000 (Art. 60.1 and 60.6), and that the "n. s." in the International Plant Names Index references [IPNI-Index Kewensis and IPNI-Gray Card Index] is incorrect [the citation refers to volume 7 of the original series, not the new series]. [Therefore, spelling of epithet is verified to be "caespitosa".]
Correspondence 3 Treatment and author notes submitted for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] by Carol Ferguson, Suzanne Strakosh, & Robert Patterson see Comment 3
Editorial Comments 3 Correspondence 3 confirms that for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] Phlox caespitosa Nutt. is to be recognized and treated as native to CA.
Correspondence 4 17 Jun 2011 e-mail from Carolyn Ferguson, one of three authors of Phlox for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] see Comment 4
Editorial Comments 4 Correspondence 4 indicates that the authors of Phlox for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] have reversed their decision to include Phlox douglasii Hook. in Phlox caespitosa Nutt., under the latter name, and instead now treat them as separate species, the latter thereby excluded from CA. [Phlox douglasii Hook. subsp. rigida (Benth.) Wherry, previously treated in this index as a synonym of Phlox caespitosa Nutt., now is treated as a synonym of Phlox douglasii Hook..]
