a Preston e-mail of 5 Jul 2000, "Blue-crown passion-flower. Naturalized in CA. SCo.; California Exotic Pest Plant Council (CalEPPC). 1999. Exotic pest plants of greatest concern in California. Oct, 1999. San Juan Capistrano, CA"
b Hrusa et al., ms later published in Madrono 49(2)61-98. 2002: DISTRIBUTION: SCo, SnGb, NCoR, s SN.; STATUS: established; NOTES: Long persisting and difficult to eradicate in garden situation, indicating strong potential to naturalize. Serves as host plant for non-native gulf fritillary caterpillars. Reported as persistent, but non-spontaneous in Ventura Co. by H.M. Pollard (specimen at DAV, SBBG).
c [for Passiflora caerulea L.] Hrusa et al., Madrono 49(2)61-98. 2002: DIST: NCoR, SnGb, SCo, s SN: Hrusa et al. Current Status: Naturalized outside of wildlands: DOC: Los Angeles Co., Riverside Co. and San Bernardino Co:. Sanders, A.C. (Madrono, in press); Fresno Co.: Sequoia Mills, no date, K. Brandegee s.n., (UC); Napa Co.: Calistoga, July 11, 1910, K. Brandegee s.n. (UC): NOTES: Long persisting and difficult to eradicate in garden situation, indicating strong potential to naturalize. Serves as host plant for non-native gulf fritillary caterpillars. Reported as non-spontaneous in Ventura Co. by H.M. Pollard (specimen at DAV, SBBG).
Initial Editorial Comments spelling of epithet uncertain, "caerulea" in Kartesz & Meacham, International Plant Names Index-APNI, Hrusa et al., 2002; "coerulea" in Hrusa et al., ms; according to Source c, occurring in California only as an agricultural or garden weed, but difficult to eradicate in such situations and therefore a threat to escape and become naturalized outside cultivation (4 Feb 2003)
Variant Spelling Passiflora cerulea
Editorial Recommendation spelling of epithet to be checked [resolved]
Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 26 Aug 2008 e-mail from Richard Moe, in response to e-mail query from Mary A. Kessler see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 indicates that spelling of the specific epithet should be corrected to "caerulea" because that is what Linnaeus used in Species Plantarum. [Therefore, spelling of epithet corrected to "caerulea", from "cerulea" previously in this Index, 28 Aug 2008.]
Correspondence 2 Treatment and author notes submitted for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 Correspondence 2 indicates that for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] Passiflora caerulea L. is to be recognized and treated as naturalized in CA.
