Initial Editorial Comments treated as Senecio streptanthifolius Greene in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1].
Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 16 Apr 2003 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 indicates that John F. Bain (Flora North America author for Packera), in Novon 12:437 (2002), refers to ICBN (St. Louis Code) 2000 Art. 53.6 Note 3, Ex. 20 and states "Following the... rule, the taxon commonly treated as Packera strepthanthifolia (Greene) Weber & Löve (based on Senecio streptanthifolius Greene, a name replacing the later homonym Senecio cymbalarioides Nutt.) [not Senecio cymbalarioides J. N. Buek] should hereafter be treated as Packera cymbalarioides (Nutt.) Weber & Löve, a combination published in 1981. [Therefore, Packera streptanthifolius (Greene) W. A. Weber & Á. Löve is rendered superfluous.]
Correspondence 2 31 Oct 2006 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 Correspondence 2 indicates that, contrary to the conclusions of Correspondence 1, Packera streptanthifolia is the correct name and Packera cymbalarioides is superfluous when the two are treated as synonyms, based on the fact that John F. Bain (Novon 13:279. 2003) rescinded his earlier argument (Novon 12:437. 2002) in favor of Packera cymbalarioides, explaining that his earlier argument was based on a misinterpretation of ICBN Art. 53.6 Note 3 ["Note 3. A homonym renamed or rejected under Art. 53.6 remains legitimate and takes precedence over a later synonym of the same rank, should a transfer to another genus or species be effected."] because that article applies only to homonyms of equal priority, and in this case the homonym Senecio cymbalarioides H. Buek 1840 has priority over the later homonym Senecio cymbalarioides Nutt. 1841; Correspondence 1 also indicates that the replacement name Senecio streptanthifolius Greene 1895 provides the earliest epithet for this species and must be used when it is placed in Packera, as has been done by Debra Trock, The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] Author for Packera. [Therefore, for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] Packera streptanthifolia is the correct name and Packera cymbalarioides is superfluous.]
