Correspondence 1 | Treatment and author notes submitted for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] by Robert E. Preston see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 | Correspondence 1 indicates that for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] Oxalis albicans Kunth subsp. pilosa (Nutt.) Eiten is to be treated as a synonym of Oxalis corniculata L. subsp. pilosa (Small) Lourteig. Correspondence 1 also indicates that Torrey & Gray (Fl. N. Amer. 1: 212. 1838) did not accept Nuttall's proposed Oxalis pilosa [basionym of Oxalis corniculata L. subsp. pilosa (Small) Lourteig], including it within Oxalis corniculata and putting Nuttall's description in a footnote, so that the name Oxalis pilosa Nutt. in Torr. & A. Gray was not validly published, and that Small (Bull. Torrey Bot. Club. 23: 457. 1896) was the first to validly publish the name, so that the correct citation is Oxalis pilosa Nutt. ex Small. [Jeff Greenhouse disagrees with the foregoing (as does Preston at this point), on the grounds that Torrey & Gray quoted Nuttall's name and description, thereby publishing it for Nuttall regardless of whether or not they accepted it themselves, that Nuttall is the author of the name, and that he definitely accepted the species. Therefore, author citation corrected to Oxalis corniculata L. subsp. pilosa (Nutt.) Lourteig, from Oxalis corniculata L. subsp. pilosa (Small) Lourteig previously in this Index, 25 Jun 2008.]
Correspondence 2 | 15 Jan 2010 e-mail from Rob Preston see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 | Correspondence 2 indicates that for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] Oxalis corniculata L. subsp. pilosa (Nutt.) Lourteig is to be treated as a synonym of Oxalis pilosa Nutt., which is to be treated as native to CA.
