Initial Editorial Analysis 23 Jun 2010
Source of Report for California | Munz, P.A. in collaboration with D. D. Keck. 1968, as cited in Kartesz & Meacham
Initial Editorial Comments | in no way mentioned in Munz (despite Kartesz & Meacham citation), The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1]; indicated only for California in Kartesz & Meacham; Ornithopus roseus Dufour (as Ornithopus sativus subsp. roseus) listed as synonym in Kartesz & Meacham, treated as synonym of Ornithopus sativus in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1]; infras not recognized in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1]
Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 | Treatment and author notes submitted for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] by Martin F. Wojciechowski see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 | Correspondence 1 indicates that for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] Ornithopus sativus Brot. is to be treated as an extirpated alien, in that the 1 site from which it was collected (evidently as a waif at the time) has been developed, and that infraspecific taxa are not to be recognized in the species, in part because of the existence in sw Europe of intermediates between the 2, which evidently are represented by Ornithopus sativus Brot. var. macrorrhynchus Willk.. [Therefore, Ornithopus sativus Brot. subsp. sativus, Ornithopus sativus Brot. subsp. isthmocarpus (Coss.) Dostál, and Ornithopus sativus Brot. var. macrorrhynchus Willk. all to be treated for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] as synonyms of Ornithopus sativus Brot., despite some suggestion that there is still a possibility they represent meaningful taxa, and that further study is needed.]
Correspondence 2 | 21 Jun 2010 e-mail from Rob Preston see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 | Correspondence 2 indicates that Ornithopus sativus Brot. is definitely not extirpated in CA, and in fact is spreading from its original collection localities and therefore is naturalized, as indicated by plants observed (but not collected) by Preston from a grassland habitat at Henry Coe State Park in 2006.
