Information from the Index of California Plant Names (ICPN)
Current Jepson Flora Project Misapplied Names Opuntia ficus-indica (L.) Mill., in part
Initial Editorial Analysis 7 Apr 2011
Source of Report for California The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1]
Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 16 Jun 2009 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 indicates: that Opuntia occidentalis was published by Engelmann and John M. Bigelow (Engelm. & J.M. Bigelow in Authors of Plant Names) in Pacific Railr. Rep. 4(pt. 5 [no. 3]) 38 (55; t. 7) (1856); that the citation Engelm. & J.M. Bigelow applies to the hybrid form of the name as well as the non-hybrid form; and that references to publication of the name Opuntia occidentalis by Engelmann in Proceedings of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences 3:291 (1856) appear to be incorrect because he referred to the taxon as a subspecies, although it isn't clear that he actually made the combination based on Opuntia occidentalis Engelm. & J.M. Bigelow. [Therefore, author citation corrected to Opuntia X occidentalis Engelm. & J.M. Bigelow, from Opuntia X occidentalis Engelm. previously in this Index, 21 Dec 2010.]
Correspondence 2 Treatment and author notes submitted for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 Correspondence 2 indicates that for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] Opuntia X occidentalis Engelm. & J.M. Bigelow, as Opuntia occidentalis Engelm. & J.M. Bigelow, is to be treated as a name that has been misapplied in California to plants belonging instead to Opuntia littoralis (Engelm.) Cockerell. [However, Opuntia X occidentalis Engelm. & J.M. Bigelow also is recognized and treated as native to CA, so its misapplication to plants belonging instead to Opuntia littoralis (Engelm.) Cockerell evidently is only in part. Also, Opuntia ficus-indica (L.) Mill also is recognized and treated as native to CA, so its misapplication to plants belonging instead to Opuntia X occidentalis Engelm. & J.M. Bigelow also evidently is only in part.]
