Source of Report for California
a Beauchamp, R.M. 1986. A Flora of San Diego County, California. Sweetwater River Press, National City, as cited in Kartesz & Meacham
b Simpson, M. G., and J. P. Rebman, 1996. Checklist of the Vascular Plants of San Diego County. 3rd edition. SDSU Herbarium Press, San Diego, CA
Initial Editorial Comments indicated for e US, Canada, questionable in California in Kartesz & Meacham; naturalized in CA, not listed in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1], according to Simpson & Rebman, 1996; author citation uncertain, Nelumbo lutea (Willd.) Pers. in Simpson & Rebman, 1996, Nelumbo lutea Willd. in International Plant Names Index-Gray Card Index
Editorial Recommendation author citation to be checked [resolved]
Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 19 Aug 2003 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 indicates that Nelumbium luteum Willdenow (Sp. Pl. 2:1259. 1799) is correctable (based on ICBN 2000, Art. 61.4) to Nelumbo lutea, since Nelumbium Juss. (1789) is considered (in Farr, et al., Index Nominum Genericorum [Plantarum] 2:1154 [1979]) to be an orthographic variant of Nelumbo Adans. (1763), rendering superfluous Persoon's later publication of Nelumbo lutea. [Therefore, the correct author citation is Nelumbo lutea Willd., as cited]
Correspondence 2 22 Feb 2005 e-mail from John Wiersema see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 Correspondence 2 indicates a Current Status of Jepson Flora Project-3 for this taxon in CA.
Correspondence 3 25 Feb 2005 e-mail from John Wiersema [primarily in reference to Nymphaea alba, but with general comments applicable to Nelumbo lutea Willd. as well] see Comment 3
Editorial Comments 3 Correspondence 3 includes a strong argument against including Nelumbo lutea Willd. as a naturalized element of the flora, based primarily on uncertainties about the identity of the plants reported and the fact that they do not appear to have spread beyond the point of their initial introduction(s).
