Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 14 May 2021 e-mail from Bruce Baldwin, including forwarded e-mails from Peter Zika and Kanchi Gandhi see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 indicates, based on an explanation by Gandhi, that the correct author citation is Montia linearis (Douglas) Greene, based on Claytonia linearis Douglas. In Gandhi's own words: Montia linearis (Douglas) Greene, Fl. Francisc. 181 (1891).//Basionym: Claytonia linearis Douglas, Fl. Bor.-Amer. (Hooker) 1(4): t. 71 (1832); 1(5): 224. 1832 P. 224: https://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/page/413406#page/235/mode/1up//The above citations are OK.//On p. 224, Hooker ascribed the name and the description to Douglas.//Of course, the problem is not straight forward.//The plate 71 (in vol. 1, part 4) came before the text (in vol. 1, part 5).//In the index (p. 334), the species name is ascribed to Douglas and refers to plate 71 (not to p. 224).//The plate 71 has an analysis and can validate the name (the text is NOT essential in this case), and Douglas is nothing to do with making the plate.//Therefore, some works cite the authorship as "Douglas ex Hooker".//However, for determining correct authorship, Art. 46.8 mandates that the whole publication must be taken into consideration.//In other words, although vol. 1(4) and 1(5) were issued at different dates (precise dates not known), the 2 parts are considered together to determine the authorship.//Accordingly, Douglas is the author (as shown in vol. 1(5))." [Therefore, author citation corrected to Montia linearis (Douglas) Greene, from Montia linearis (Hook.) Greene previously in this Index, 19 May 2021.]
