CUCURBITACEAE
·

Information from the Index of California Plant Names (ICPN)
Initial Editorial Analysis Nov 1 2001
Source of Report for California The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1]
Variant Spelling Marah oreganus
Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 29 May 2009 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 indicates: that Marah oreganus was published by Thomas Howell (Howell in Authors of Plant Names) in A Flora of Northwest America 2:239 (1898), based on Megarrhiza oregana which was published by Sereno Watson (S. Watson in Authors of Plant Names) in Proceedings of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences 11:138 (1876); that Watson ascribed the name to "Torrey" but provided his own short diagnostic description; and that Watson's reference in the protologue to "Pacif. R. Rep. 6. 74" refers to Megarrhiza oregana Torr., which is a nom. nud. and therefore cannot and does not serve as a basionym. [Therefore, author citation corrected to Marah oreganus (Torr. ex S. Watson) Howell, from Marah oreganus (Torr. & A. Gray) Howell previously in this Index, 21 Dec 2010.].
Correspondence 2 14 Feb 2011 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse, including forwarded e-mails from John L. Strother, Kanchi Gandhi, and Avinoam Danin see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 Correspondence 2 indicates that Marah is properly treated as feminine. [Therefore, spelling of epithet corrected to Marah oregana (Torr. ex S. Watson) Howell, from Marah oreganus (Torr. ex S. Watson) Howell previously in this Index, 15 Feb 2011 .]
