Dunn (= Authors of Plant Names) in El Aliso 3:155 (1955), based on Lupinus bicolor var. tridentatus Eastw. ex C.P. Sm. (Bulletin of the Torrey Botanical Club 50(12): 377-380, f. 87. 1923 [1924]), and that Smith ascribed the name to Eastwood but supplied his own Latin diagnosis.
