Information from the Index of California Plant Names (ICPN)
Initial Editorial Analysis 2 Mar 2007
Source of Report for California Kartesz & Meacham
Initial Editorial Comments treated as Lactuca tatarica subsp. pulchella in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1]
Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 30 Jun 2003 e-mail from John Strother see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 indicates that specimens previously filed as Lactuca tatarica (Linnaeus) C. A. Meyer subsp. pulchella (Pursh) Stebbins in JEPS and UC are now filed (and will be treated in Flora North America) as Mulgedium pulchellum (Pursh) G. Don.
Correspondence 2 1 Mar 2007 e-mail from David J. Keil, including comments on numerous genera to be submitted by Keil for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 Correspondence 1 indicates that, according to David J. Keil (Author of genus for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2]), Strother (Flora North America 19:258-259) treated Mulgedium as distinct from Lactuca and recognized Mulgedium pulchellum (Pursh) G. Don in place of Lactuca tatarica (L.) C.A. Meyer ssp. pulchella (Pursh) Stebbins, but that Keil examined this and could find no justification for the split, citing Koopman et al. (AJB 85:1517--1530. 1998) in support of inclusion of Mulgedium in Lactuca, so that Keil will treat the plant in question as Lactuca tatarica (L.) C.A. Meyer ssp. pulchella (Pursh) Stebbins as in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1]1.
Correspondence 3 15 Nov 2007 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 3
Editorial Comments 3 Correspondence 3 indicates: that Reveal (Phytologia 89:68--69, 2007) explains that Nuttall published Lactuca oblongifolia in Catalogue of New and Interesting Plants Collected in Upper Louisiana [2] no. 47. 1813 [ante Aug 1813], based on the same type as Sonchus pulchellus Pursh (Flora Americae Septentrionalis 2: 502. 1814 [Dec. 1813]; that Strother, in Flora North America 19:259 (2006), stated "if 'perennial' plus 'Fl. blue' constitutes sufficient description for valid publication of the name Lactuca oblongifolia Nutt. (1813), then a new combination in Mulgedium based on that name may be appropriate for what is here called M. pulchellum."; that Strother (pers. com.) has now accepted this view, rendering Sonchus pulchellus Pursh an illegitimate later synonym, according to ICPN 2006 Art. 52.1; that that means that Mulgedium pulchellum G. Don (without the Pursh parenthetical, according to ICBN 2006 Art. 58.1) is a valid nom. nov. but itself is illegitimate since the earlier epithet oblongifolium should have been adopted; that Reveal, as cited above, published Mulgedium oblongifolium (Nutt.) Reveal as the correct name to replace Mulgedium pulchellum; and that this also eliminates the parenthetical Pursh citations for Lactuca tatarica subsp. pulchella Stebbins and Lactuca tatarica var. pulchella Breitung, although those two names remain valid. [Therefore, author citation corrected to Lactuca tatarica (L.) C. A. Mey. var. pulchella Breitung, from Lactuca tatarica (L.) C. A. Mey. var. pulchella (Pursh) Breitung previously in this Index, 19 Nov 2007.]
