Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 31 Jan 2006 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 indicates that, according to Peter Ball (The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] author), as stated in a 30 Jan 2006 e-mail to M. Wetherwax, the author citation in Flora North America, namely "(Villars) Fiori in A. Fiori et al., Fl. Italia. 1: 125. 1896.", is correct. [Therefore, author citation changed to Kobresia myosuroides (Vill.) Fiori, from Kobresia myosuroides (Vill.) Fiori & Paol. previously in this Index, 2 Feb 2006, even though supporting evidence not indicated, and it also is Kobresia myosuroides (Vill.) Fiori & Paol. in International Plant Names Index (Index Kewensis).]
Correspondence 2 5 Nov 2008 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 Correspondence 2 indicates that [despite the conclusions of Correspondence 1] the correct citation is Kobresia myosuroides (Vill.) Fiori & Paol. after all; that the protologue (A. Fiori & Paoletti, Flora analitica d'Italia 1:125. 1896) gives "K. myosuroides (Vill.) Nobis" and has an indirect basionym reference "Carex Vill. (1779)" as a synonym; that the term "nobis" is Latin for "of us", indicating that the name is being ascribed to both authors (Fiori & Paol.); and that the basionym reference is to Carex myosuroides Vill. (Prospectus de l'Histoire des Plantes de Dauphiné 17. 1779). [Therefore, author citation corrected (back to) Kobresia myosuroides (Vill.) Fiori & Paol., from Kobresia myosuroides (Vill.) Fiori previously in this Index, 14 Nov 2008.]
Correspondence 3 10 Nov 2008 e-mail from Peter Ball, author of Kobresia for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2], including forwarded e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 3
Editorial Comments 3 Correspondence 3 indicates that, according to Greenhouse: even though Kobresia myosuroides (1896) was published after Kobresia bellardii (1807), in publishing Kobresia myosuroides the authors listed "Carex Vill. (1779)" and "C. Bellardi All. (1785)" as synonyms, and since "Carex Vill. (1779)" refers to Carex myosuroides Vill. (Prospectus de l'Histoire des Plantes de Dauphiné 17-18. 1779), the specific epithet "myosuroides" predates "bellardii" and therefore has priority when the two names are considered conspecific [as they are to be for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] according to Ball], so that Kobresia myosuroides is the correct name, with Kobresia bellardii (All.) K. Koch as a synonym. According to Ball, there has been some debate as to whether the 1779 publication is valid because of the brevity of the description, but most workers now are of the opinion that it was.]
Correspondence 4 Treatment and author notes submitted for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] by Peter W. Ball see Comment 4
Editorial Comments 4 Correspondence 4 indicates that for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] Kobresia bellardii (All.) K. Koch is to be treated as a synonym of Kobresia myosuroides (Vill.) Fiori & Paol., just the opposite of how the names were treated in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1], for reasons discussed under Correspondence 3.
