Initial Editorial Analysis Nov 1 2001
Source of Report for California | The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1]
Initial Editorial Comments | author citation uncertain, (Elmer) Crum ex D. D. Keck in Kartesz & Meacham
Editorial Recommendation | author citation to be checked [resolved, not]
Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 | 1 Dec 2004 e-mail from Misa Ward see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 | Correspondence appended verbatim is pertinent to The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] account: "Known from fewer than twenty occurrences. Populations from near Ft. Bragg, MEN Co. may be varietally distinct. Historical occurrences need field surveys. Threatened by non-native plants and residential development. See Systematic Botany 18(1):137-144 (1993) for distributional information."
Correspondence 2 | 24 Jul 2007 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 | Correspondence 2 indicates that Horkelia marinensis was published by D.D. Keck in Lloydia 1:91 (1938), based on Horkelia bolanderi var. marinensis Elmer (Botanical Gazette 41(5): 321. 1906), and that Keck ascribed the combination to "Miss Crum" (Crum in Authors of Plant Names), indicating that she had annotated some specimens using that combination but not indicating that she had participated in authorship of the paper. [Therefore, author citation corrected to Horkelia marinensis (Elmer) (Elmer) Crum ex D.D. Keck, from Horkelia marinensis (Elmer) Crum previously in this Index, 24 Jul 2007.]
Correspondence 3 | 24 Jul 2007 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse, including forwarded e-mails of 24 Jul 2007 involving Barbara Ertter, Kanchi Gandhi, and Jim Reveal see Comment 3
Editorial Comments 3 | Correspondence 3 indicates that, in Ertter's interpretation, Keck's statement (p. 91) that "With her permission, Miss Crum is assigned the authorship of this new combination, under which she has determined some collections." means that the correct author citation is Horkelia marinensis (Elmer) Crum in D.D. Keck instead of Horkelia marinensis (Elmer) Crum ex D.D. Keck, especially, in Ertter's view, in light of the fact that during this period Crum was active in Potentilleae and she and Keck were in regular communication. Correspondence 3 also indicates that this interpretation has been accepted by Kanchi Gandhi, who has made the change to "in" (from "ex") in International Plant Names Index. [See Correspondence 4 and 5]
Correspondence 4 | 26 Jul 2007 e-mail from Barbara Ertter, including forwarded 26 Jul 2007 e-mail from Jim Reveal see Comment 4
Editorial Comments 4 | Correspondence 4 indicates that Jim Reveal concurs with Kanchi Gandhi in regarding the correct author citation to be Horkelia marinensis (Elmer) Crum in D.D. Keck. [See Correspondence 5]
Correspondence 5 | 16 Aug 2007 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 5
Editorial Comments 5 | Correspondence 5 indicates that both John Strother and Jeff Greenhouse are of the opinion that there is no basis for the interpretation that Crum was effectively assigned authorship by Keck [even though Keck stated explicitly that he was doing so, Strother and Greenhouse do not believe such an action is permitted by ICBN], and that Keck instead acknowledged her by ascribing the name to her (effectively, although not explicitly, by use of "Crum in herb."). [Despite the fact that the Editor of this Index agrees with Strother and Greenhouse, it is his policy to defer in such cases to the opinion of the author of the group in question (in this case, Ertter, as author of Horkelia for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2]), and to encourage agreement, where possible, between this Index and International Plant Names Index. Therefore, author citation changed to Horkelia marinensis (Elmer) Crum in D.D. Keck, from Horkelia marinensis (Elmer) Crum ex D.D. Keck previously in this Index, 20 Aug 2007.]
