Information from the Index of California Plant Names (ICPN)
Initial Editorial Analysis 2 Mar 2006
Notes on Authorship of Name all = Authors of Plant Names
Source of Report for California The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1]
Initial Editorial Comments author citation uncertain, changed by Margriet Wetherwax prior to generation of this checklist, from H. Mason & A. D. Grant originally in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1], to Lindl.; Dougl. ex H. Mason & A. D. Grant in Kartesz & Meacham, International Plant Names Index-Gray Card Index (Madrono 9:212. 1948); according to IPNI-GCI, "nom. superfl. for G. grinnellii A. Brand 1907. [On p. 213, based on G. grinnellii, Mason and Grant published G. splendens subsp. grinnellii]"; from Wilken & Wetherwax, Corrections to The Jepson Manual, "The author of Gilia splendens is Lindl., not 'H. Mason & A. D. Grant'"
Editorial Recommendation author citation to be checked [resolved]
Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 20 May 2003 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 indicates that Verne Grant and Tom Wendt (Taxon 52:145--146. 2003) reviewed the nomenclature of Gilia grinnellii and other names with which it has been associated, including Gilia splendens: this name was ascribed to Douglas by Lindley in 1836 and by Paxton in 1837, but neither publication was valid as both authors considered the name to be synonymous with Gilia tenuiflora; Gilia splendens was validly published by Herbert Mason and Alva D. Grant (Madroño 9:212--213.1948), who ascribed the name to Douglas while referring to Lindley's Latin description and accompanying illustration (which thus serves as the holotype); thus, the correct author citation is Gilia splendens Douglas ex H. Mason & A. D. Grant. [Author citation corrected back to Gilia splendens Douglas ex H. Mason & A. D. Grant, originally in this Index, from Gilia splendens Lindl., to which it had been previously corrected, 3 Jun 2003.]
Correspondence 2 4 Jan 2006 e-mail from Leigh Johnson, The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] author, regarding status of names in Gilia and Saltugilia for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2]. see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 Correspondence 2 indicates that for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] Gilia splendens is to be treated as a synonym of Saltugilia splendens (Dougl. ex H. Mason & A. D. Grant) L. A. Johnson, submitted in Dec 2005 for publication in Novon: Johnson, L. A. "Transfer of the western North American species Gilia splendens to Saltugilia (Polemoniaceae), and the taxonomic disposition of Gilia scopulorum, Gilia stellata, and Gilia yorkii."
Correspondence 3 8 Mar 2006 e-mail from Leigh Johnson, in response to e-mail query of 2 Mar 2006 from Rosatti see Comment 3
Editorial Comments 3 Correspondence 3 cites Brummitt, R. K. 2005. Report of the Committee for Spermatophyta: 57. Taxon 54: 1093-1103, wherein (1641) includes a recommendation to accept a conserved type for Gilia splendens [thereby legitimizing that name]. [On 8 Mar 2006, it is unknown to the Editor of this Index whether or not a vote on this proposal was taken at the XVII International Botanical Congress 2005 in Vienna.]
