Editorial Comments 1 | Correspondence 1 indicates that the correct etymology of the genus name Gilia was explained by Al Schneider in e-mails forwarded by Michael Charters on 8 Jun 2005 to Jeff Greenhouse: Gilia was published by Ruiz & Pavon (Prodr. 25. 1794), who dedicated the genus to Felipe Gil, a Spanish spelling of Filippo Gilii, who was actually an Italian naturalist with dates 1756-1821. [Therefore, the etymology will be corrected to "Filippo Luigi Gilii, Italian naturalist, 1756-1821" in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2], from "Felipe Gil, 18th century Spanish botanist" in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1].] | |
