Jepson Flora Project: Jepson Interchange for California Floristics
Funastrum
APOCYNACEAE (genus previously included in Asclepiadaceae)
Initial Editorial Analysis Nov 1 2001
Source of Report for California added manually by Rosatti
Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 Liede 1996 Syst Bot 21 see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Cladistic analyses of morphological characters by Liede (Liede 1996 Syst Bot 21:31-44) indicate Sarcostemma sensu lato (e.g., Horn) is not monophyletic, but that older, smaller genera (including Sarcostemma, sensu stricto, and Funastrum) are; evidence from the trnL-F spacer region by Liede and Tauber (00 Plant Sys Evol 225:133-140) confirms that Sarcostemma sensu lato is polyphyletic, and supports recognition of Old World taxa in genera including Sarcostemma, and New World taxa in genera including Funastrum, with the result that California taxa treated as Sarcostemma in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1] are now treated in Funastrum.
