Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 $ 8 Feb 2002, from Margriet Wetherwax see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1, including e-mail from John O. Sawyer, The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1] author, confirms Current Status as 1a.
Correspondence 2 20 Mar 2007 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 Correspondence 2 indicates that Frangula purshiana was published by J. G. Cooper (= Authors of Plant Names) in Pacif. Rail. Rep. 12(2):57 (1860), based on Rhamnus purshiana DC. (Prodromus Systematis Naturalis Regni Vegetabilis 2: 25. 1825). [Therefore, author citation corrected to Frangula purshiana (DC.) J. G. Cooper, from Frangula purshiana (DC.) Cooper previously in this Index, 12 Apr 2007.]
Correspondence 3 Treatment and author notes submitted for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] by John O. Sawyer, Jr. see Comment 3
Editorial Comments 3 Correspondence 3 indicates that for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] Rhamnus purshiana DC. is to be treated as a synonym of Frangula purshiana (DC.) J. G. Cooper.
Correspondence 4 14 Sep 2016 e-mail from Bruce Baldwin, including forwarded e-mails from Douglas Goldman and Kanchi Gandhi see Comment 4
Editorial Comments 4 Correspondence 4 indicates that although J. G. Cooper is the author of the report cited under Correspondence 2 as the protologue, Pacif. Rail. Rep. 12(2):57 (1860), the combination is actually credited by Cooper to Asa Gray, as initially pointed out by Douglas Goldman and confirmed by Kanchi Gandhi, who cited Art. 46.5 in ICBN (Melbourne Code). [Therefore, author citation corrected to Frangula purshiana (DC.) A. Gray, from Frangula purshiana (DC.) J. G. Cooper previously in this Index, 18 Oct 2016.]
Correspondence 5 16 Jan 2018 e-mail from John W. Landon see Comment 5
Editorial Comments 5 Correspondence 5 indicates; that J. G. Cooper validly published Frangula purshiana in 1857 and not 1860 as claimed in Correspondence 4; that the name appeared in a paper in volume 10 of the Transactions of the American Medical Association titled "Report on the Medical Flora of Washington Territory."; and that in his comments under Rhamnus purshiana, Cooper wrote: " This plant has been recently separated from the genus Rhamnus by Prof. Gray, and, with other species, now belongs to Frangula, standing as F. Purshiana in my list.", thereby clearly attributing the name to A. Gray. Correspondence 5 also indicates that volume 10 of this journal was published in November 1857, as was noted in the 1858 report of the Committee of Publication (Trans. Amer. Med. Assoc. 11: 55. 1858). [Therefore, assuming Gray did not previously make the combination correctly himself, author citation corrected to Frangula purshiana (DC.) A. Gray ex J.G. Cooper, from Frangula purshiana (DC.) A. Gray previously in this Index, 7 Feb 2018.]
