Current Jepson Flora Project Synonyms | Fimbristylis littoralis Gaudich.
Initial Editorial Analysis 18 Aug 2010
Source of Report for California | The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1]
Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 | 29 Jul 2004 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 | Correspondence 1 indicates: that different opinions have been put forth as to which of the two specimens considered by Linnaeus to be Scirpus miliaceus L., the basionym for Fimbristylis miliacea (L.) Vahl, should serve as the type for that name; that one specimen (Linnaean specimen 1) corresponds to what had long been known by the specific epithet miliaceus while the other (Linnaean specimen 2) has been determined to be a different species known now as Fimbristylis quinquangularis (Vahl) Kunth; that the situation was resolved by J. H. Kern (Taxon 3:246. 1954) in designating the lectotype of Scirpus miliaceus to be Linnaean specimen 1, thus following ICBN Recommendation 9A.5 to preserve current usage; that prior to Kern's designation of lectotype, some authors considered Fimbristylis miliacea (= Scirpus miliaceus) to be the correct name for Fimbristylis quinquangularis (Vahl) Kunth (= Scirpus quinquangularis Vahl), presumably because they had considered only Linnaean specimen 2, and they used the next available name, Fimbristylis littoralis Gaudich., for what we now know as Fimbristylis miliacea (Linnaean specimen 1); and that by accepting Kern's lectotype designation, Fimbristylis littoralis becomes a synonym of Fimbristylis miliacea, which is the name used in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1].
Correspondence 2 | 27 Aug 2004 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 | Correspondence 2 indicates that the Flora North America 23:121 (2002) account of Fimbristylis miliacea by Robert Kral does not include California in its distribution. [Whether or not the taxon occurs in California as a waif or in some other non-naturalized way remains uncertain; "Collected in SnFrB in 1866", for Fimbristylis miliacea in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1].]
Correspondence 3 | Treatment and author notes submitted for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] by S. Galen Smith see Comment 3
Editorial Comments 3 | Correspondence 3 indicates that for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] Fimbristylis miliacea (L.) Vahl is not to be treated or even mentioned, on the grounds that it is undocumented in the state and suggesting that the author agrees that a Current Status of 4 is appropriate in the sense that this entry with this Current Status in this Index was mentioned without objection.
