Editorial Comments 1 | Correspondence 1 indicates that the treatment of Euphorbiaceae in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] needs to be revised, in order to accommodate the addition of 3 waifs as well as a new, shrubby, desert species (Euphorbia jaegeri V.W. Steinm. & J. André), and because of general acceptance of the idea, based on molecular and phylogenetic evidence, that Euphorbia and Chamaesyce form a monophyletic group and therefore should be treated as one genus. [According to Yang et al., 2012, "Molecular phylogenetics and classification of Euphorbia subgenus Chamaesyce (Euphorbiaceae)" (Taxon 61:764-789), "All molecular phylogenetic studies to date support all cyathium-bearing species as forming a monophyletic Euphorbia s.l. (Steinmann & Porter, 2002; Bruyns & al., 2006, 2011; Park & Jansen, 2007; Zimmermann & al., 2010; Horn & al., 2012a). Yang et al. also provide a formal infrageneric classification in which descriptions and species lists are given for each section or subsection recognized, which also shows that all taxa included in Chamaesyce in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] have existing combinations in Euphorbia.] | |
