Initial Editorial Analysis Nov 1 2001
Source of Report for California | The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1]
Initial Editorial Comments | author citation corrected from (Douglas) Greene in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1], in accordance with Rosatti notes; subspp. in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1] not in International Plant Names Index, Gray Card Index, possibly ined.
Editorial Recommendation | name possibly illegitimate [resolved]
Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 | 31 Jul 2001 e-mail from Margriet Wetherwax see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 | Correspondence 1 indicates subspp. of R. A. Price still not published as of 7 Dec 2000, so vars. are to be used.
Correspondence 2 | 5 Mar 2002 e-mail from Margriet Wetherwax see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 | Correspondence 2 indicates that the text of the protologue for Cheiranthes capitatum, the basionym, was taken from an ms by Douglas, so that the correct citation is Erysimum capitatum (Douglas in Hook.) Greene. [In fact, only a small part of the description, at the end, is placed double quotation marks, and the entire description is followed by "---Douglas ms". Rosatti's interpretation of this would be that Hook. was ascribing the entire description to Douglas, in a general way, and the part in double quotation marks in a specific way, also to Douglas; under this interpretation, the correct citation would be Erysimum capitatum (Douglas ex Hook.) Greene (also the citation given in Kartesz & Meacham). John Strother (pers. comm.) interprets this in yet another way, concluding that Hook. was ascribing only the few words in double quotation marks to Douglas, so that Douglas should not be included in the author citation at all, yielding Erysimum capitatum (Hook.) Greene. When abbreviated, the interpretations of both Rosatti (and Kartesz & Meacham) and Strother yield Erysimum capitatum (Hook.) Greene.]
Correspondence 3 | 13 Feb 2009 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 3
Editorial Comments 3 | Correspondence 3 indicates: that in Correspondence 2, Cheiranthes in three places should be spelled Cheiranthus and the epithet in two of those places should therefore be spelled "capitatus"; that the protologue for the basionym, Cheiranthus capitatus, cites Cheiranthus asper Cham. & Schlecht. (Linnaea 1:14. 1826) as a synonym; that this name is an illegitimate later homonym of Cheiranthus asper Nutt. (The Genera of North American Plants 2:69. 1818); that Cheiranthus capitatus Hook. (Flora Boreali-Americana 1(1):38. 1829) is, however, a legitimate replacement name for Cheiranthus asper Cham. & Schlecht; that the author citation Cheiranthus capitatus Hook. can be correctly used for either of the two interpretations given in Editorial Comments 2; and that since Greene's basionym for Erysimum capitatum is legitimate, the author citation (Hook.) Greene is correct and would avoid having to resolve the ambiguity of Greene's ascription. [Therefore, author citation changed to Erysimum capitatum (Hook.) Greene, from Erysimum capitatum (Douglas ex Hook.) Greene previously in this Index, 19 Feb 2009.]
