Source of Report for California Kartesz & Meacham
Initial Editorial Comments Intermediates between Equisetum hyemale subsp. affine and Equisetum laevigatum (aborted spores), according to The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1]
Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 Jun 2000 pers. comm. from Alan R. Smith see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 indicates addition only if other sterile hybrids included.
Correspondence 2 Treatment and notes submitted for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] by Robert E. Preston and Alan R. Smith (Family Editor) see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 Correspondence 2 indicates that for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] Equisetum X ferrissii Clute, though not reproducing sexually, does reproduce vegetatively, from fragmented sts, sometimes forming large populations, and sometimes at great distance from parents, so that it is to be given full treatment in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2]. [Therefore, even though the hybrids are sterile, a Current Status of Jepson Flora Project-10 seem most appropriate at this time; also, according to Smith, the plant was named in honor of James H. Ferriss, a fern horticulturist from New England, and not Roxanna Ferris, so that the spelling of the epithet is correct as indicated in this Index, and the spellings "ferrisii", "ferrisiae" and others are incorrect.]
