Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 6 Oct 2008 e-mail from Richard Moe see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 indicates that Epilobium niveum is an alternate, possibly correct spelling used by International Plant Names Index for Epilobium nivium (spelled thusly in protologue and elsewhere in ICPN, Tropicos, and SMASCH [and The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1]]). Therefore, spelling of epithet uncertain.
Correspondence 2 10 Dec 2008 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 Correspondence 2 indicates: that Epilobium nivium was published by T.S. Brandegee (Brandegee in Authors of Plant Names) in Zoë 3(3):242--243, pl. 24 (1892); that the epithet is spelled "nivium" in the figure as well as the protologue, indicating that it was as the author intended and not a typographical error; that the alternate spelling "niveum", the neuter declension of the Latin "niveus", meaning "snowy", would suggest, among other possibilities, a plant with prominent white parts, which evidently would be inappropriate for this species with violet-purple petals and red or reddish calyx tube, or it might instead be suggestive of the type locality on Snow Mountain; and that, in any case, the spelling of the epithet (nivium) can be retained as originally published without violating the Code. [Therefore, spelling of epithet correct as in this Index, 11 Dec 2008; entry in this Index of Epilobium niveum Brandegee from SMASCH types table deleted 11 Dec 2008, based on change of epithet spelling to Epilobium nivium Brandegee, the same now as this entry.]
