Initial Editorial Analysis 12 May 2014 [JFP-2a (with no "pending"), of 15 Aug 2012, was in error]
Notes on Authorship of Name | all = Authors of Plant Names
Source of Report for California | The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1]
Variant Spelling | Elytrigia juncea subsp. boreali-atlantica
Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 | 7 Apr 2003 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 | Correspondence 1 indicates that the author in Botaniska Notiser 1953:357 (1953) is Nils Hylander (Hyl. in Authors of Plant Names). [Corrected to Hyl., from H. Hyl. originally in this Index, 14 Apr 2003.]
Correspondence 2 | 11 Apr 2003 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 | Correspondence 2 indicates: that Hylander published this name as Elytrigia juncea subsp. boreo-atlantica, basing the combination on Agropyrum junceum subsp. boreo-atlanticum Simonet & Guin. (Bull. Soc. Bot. France 85:176, 1938); that J. Strother and A. Smith (UC, pers. comm. to Greenhouse, 2003) agree that there is no apparent reason to change the spelling of the first part of the compound epithet to boreali; that J. Strother (UC, pers. comm. to Greenhouse, 2003), following ICBN Art. 60.9, which allows a hyphen to separate parts of a compound epithet that could stand independently, and following the example of Athyrium austro-occidentale in Ex.17 of that article, would add a hyphen, yielding boreo-atlantica as the epithet; and that Mary Barkworth (The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1] co-author), in a 4/10/03 e-mail, provided no reason for changing the original spelling. [Spelling of epithet corrected to "boreo-atlantica", from "boreali-atlantica" originally in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1] and this Index, 29 Apr 2003.]
Correspondence 3 | Treatment and author notes submitted for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] see Comment 3
Editorial Comments 3 | Correspondence 3 indicates, in a note under the genus, that Elytrigia juncea (L.) Nevski subsp. boreo-atlantica (Simonet & Guin.) Hyl. is included among a list of taxa that "have been reported for CA, may occur sporadically, but do not appear to have become naturalized." [As an active waif, the taxon would have been included in the key to members of the genus, with a description only online; the fact that the taxon was not treated this way suggests that the author might have considered it to be an historical waif. ]
Correspondence 4 | 24 Jun 2012 e-mail from David J. Keil see Comment 4
Editorial Comments 4 | Correspondence 4 indicates that the only record in CCH attached to the name Elytrigia juncea (L.) Nevski subsp. boreo-atlantica (Simonet & Guin.) Hyl. (CDA2046) was collected in 1986 and so therefore does not meet the criteria for historical waif, although it goes on to say that Keil has not attempted to relocate the plant [and he evidently has not seen the specimen on which the record is based, either].
Correspondence 5 | 4 Jul 2012 e-mail from David J. Keil see Comment 5
Editorial Comments 5 | Correspondence 5 indicates that, according to Tropicos, the correct name for Elytrigia juncea (L.) Nevski subsp. boreo-atlantica (Simonet & Guin.) Hyl. in Elymus, is Elymus farctus (Viv.) Runemark ex Melderis subsp. boreo-atlanticus (Simonet & Guin.) Melderis (in Tropicos as subsp. "boreali-atlanticus").
Correspondence 6 | 30 Jul 2012 e-mail from David J. Keil, including forwarded e-mail from Nancy Lagrille, Environmental Scientist, California State Parks and Recreation - Oceano Dunes District see Comment 6
Editorial Comments 6 | Correspondence 6 indicates that "Elytrigia juncea" [evidently in reference to Elymus farctus (Viv.) Runemark ex Melderis subsp. boreo-atlanticus (Simonet & Guin.) Melderis and therefore also Elytrigia juncea (L.) Nevski subsp. boreo-atlantica (Simonet & Guin.) Hyl.] is very invasive at Oceano Dunes, where it has been established for at least 65 years, and where a "ton" of it is being sprayed in efforts to eradicate it.
