Initial Editorial Analysis 10 Jul 2006
Source of Report for California | The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1]
Initial Editorial Comments | author citation uncertain, to extent that Gilly cited as author of combinations in both genera, Heleocharis obtusa var. engelmannii (Steud.) Gilly in Munz, Eleocharis obtusa var. engelmannii (Steud.) Gilly in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1]
Editorial Recommendation | author citation to be checked [resolved]
Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 | 23 Jul 2003 e-mail from Dan Post see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 | Correspondence 1 indicates that infraspecific taxa for Eleocharis obtusa not recognized in Flora North America.
Correspondence 2 | 27 Jun 2005 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 | Correspondence 2 indicates that the combination Eleocharis obtusa var. engelmannii was published by Charles L. Gilly (Gilly in Authors of Plant Names) in Iowa State College Journal of Science 21:92 (1946), based on Eleocharis engelmannii Steud. (Synopsis Plantarum Glumacearum 2:79. 1855), and that Heleocharis Lestib. 1819 (Essai sur la Famille des Cyperacees, 41) is an orthographic variant of Eleocharis R.Br. 1810 (Prodromus Florae Novae Hollandiae et Insulae Van-Diemen, 1:224). [Therefore, Gilly may be and in fact is the author of the combination, whichever way the genus name is spelled, and the author citation is correct as cited in this Index.]
Correspondence 3 | 10 Jul 2006 Interchange Feedback from Galen Smith see Comment 3
Editorial Comments 3 | Correspondence 3 indicates that, according to Galen Smith (author of Eleocharis for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2]), Eleocharis obtusa (Willd.) Schult. var. engelmannii (Steud.) Gilly is to be treated as Eleocharis engelmannii [author citation not indicated] in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2], following Smith's treatment in Flora of North America vol. 23.
Correspondence 4 | Treatment and author notes submitted for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] by S. Galen Smith see Comment 4
Editorial Comments 4 | Correspondence 4 confirms that for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] infraspecific taxa are not to be recognized in Eleocharis obtusa (Willd.) Schult, and that Eleocharis obtusa (Willd.) Schult. var. engelmannii (Steud.) Gilly is to be treated as Eleocharis engelmannii Steud..
