[According to ICPN-Gray Card Index, Dodecatheon pauciflorum Greene was published in Pittonia 2: 72 (1890), and Dodecatheon pulchellum (Raf.) Merr. was published later, in J. Arnold Arbor. 29: 212 (1948), so that if it is decided that these two names apply to the same taxon, the earlier name, Dodecatheon pauciflorum Greene, possibly would be used, depending on the disposition of the basionym for Dodecatheon pulchellum (Raf.) | Editorial Comments 2 | Correspondence 2 indicates that: according to International Plant Names Index (and Holmgren and Reveal), it appears that Dodecatheon pulchellum is based on Exinia pulchella Raf. (1840), with the remark in IPNI-Gray Card Index: "Although Raf. did not provide a description, his reference to Dodecatheon integrifolium sensu Hooker (Bot. Mag. 64: 7. 3622, 1 Dec 1837, non D. integrifolium Michx. 1803) validated Exinia pulchella as a gen. and sp. nov. "; and that Exinia pulchella Raf. (1840) therefore serves as the basionym for Dodecatheon pulchellum and [provides the epithet for this species, since it is the earliest legitimate name of the taxon in the same rank and since it] predates Dodecatheon pauciflorum Greene (1890). [ICBN (2000), Art. 11.4, states, "For any taxon below the rank of genus, the correct name is the combination of the final epithet of the earliest legitimate name of the taxon in the same rank, with the correct name of the genus...to which it is assigned,...", so that the correct name for this species is Dodecatheon pulchellum (Raf.)
