| Editorial Comments 1 | Correspondence 1 indicates (citing Garcia & Cafferty 2005 Taxon 54: 477-478) that a compelling case has been made by Stearn that Linnaeus did not intend to elevate Cuscuta europaea var. epithymum, published by Linnaeus in Species Plantarum (1753), to specific rank in Amoenitas Academicae (1759a), in part because he continued to treat the taxon as Cuscuta europaea var. epithymum in Systema Naturae (Linnaeus, 1759b) and the second edition of Species Plantarum (1762), but that Greuter (1989), while agreeing with Stearn on the matter of intent on the part of Linnaeus, stated that according to the Code that was current at the time (1989), the combination Cuscuta epithymum nevertheless was validly published by Linnaeus in Amoenitas Academicae. Correspondence 1 also indicates that Yuncker incorrectly attributed the combination at the rank of species to Murray, and that while Cuscuta epithymum (L.) L. and Cuscuta approximata Bab. are distinct at the level of species, only the latter occurs in CA. [Therefore, author citation correct as indicated in this Index, 20 Nov 2006.] | |
