Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 $ 8 Feb 2002, from Margriet Wetherwax see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 indicates that Grady L. Webster, The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1] author, has transferred this species [back] to Croton, from Eremocarpus, since The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1], so that what was treated as Eremocarpus setigerus in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1] is now treated as Croton setigerus Hook. [This species treated in Novon 2: 270 and Taxon 42:813.]
Correspondence 2 7 Jul 2011 e-mail from David J. Keil see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 Correspondence 2 reports the use of Croton setiger for Croton setigerus in "the new issue of Taxon" and notes that, grammatically, it would appear that it is better Latin; it also cites provisions in the Code (Art. 32.7, ICBN, Vienna Code) for correcting such improper terminations. [Based on other epithets in the genus, for example Croton californicus Müll. Arg., it appears that Croton is treated as masculine, meaning "setiger" is correct. Therefore, spelling of epithet corrected to "setiger", from "setigerus" previously in this Index, 12 Jul 2011. Furthermore, according to Stearn's Botanical Latin (p. 93), the epithet would be "setigera" for a feminine genus, and "setigerum" for a neuter genus, so "setigerus" would in no case be correct.]
