Correspondence 1 indicates: that Cornus nuttallii was validly published by Torrey & Gray (Torr. & A. Gray in Authors of Plant Names) in A Flora of North America 1(4): 652. 1840; that Torr. & A. Gray ascribed the name to Audubon but provided their own, short description; that although Audubon [had earlier] illustrated and named Cornus nuttallii in vol. 4, plate 367 of his Birds of America (1837), he provided no description or analysis of the illustration, rendering it a nom. nud.; and that Audubon, in a publication (Ornithological Biography, 4:482. 1838) later than 1837 but still earlier than that of Torr. & A. Gray, in which he discussed the Cornus he [had earlier] illustrated, still failed to provide the description or analysis of the illustration necessary for valid publication. [Therefore, author citation corrected to Cornus nuttallii Audubon ex Torr. & A. Gray, from Cornus nuttallii Audubon previously in this Index, 31 Oct 2007.]

Correspondence 2 indicates: that the author citation indicated by Greenhouse [Correspondence 1] is incorrect; that although Greenhouse correctly noted that Cornus nuttallii was published as a nomen nudum by Audubon on plate 367 in volume 4 of his Birds of America (1837), he erroneously rejected Audubon's valid publication of Cornus nuttallii a year later [1838] in volume 4 of his Ornithological Biography; that Greenhouse wrongly asserted that Audubon failed to provide a description or analysis of plate 367 necessary for valid publication; that the description of Cornus nuttallii on page 482 [of the 1838 work] meets every criterion for valid publication and the reference on page 479 [of the 1838 work] clearly establishes the figure of Cornus nuttallii on plate 367 [of the 1837 work] as the type of the species; that volume 4 of Audubon's Ornithological Biography [in which the description was validly published and the reference to plate 367 of the 1837 work were made] was published on 16 Nov 1838, some 18 months before Torrey and Gray published their description of Cornus nuttallii; and that, therefore, the correct citation for Cornus nuttallii is Cornus nuttallii Audubon, Ornithol.
