Source of Report for California
a Preston e-mail of 5 Jul 2000, "New Zealand cabbage. Naturalized in CA. CCo (Salt Point, Sonoma Co.); California Exotic Pest Plant Council (CalEPPC). 1999. Exotic pest plants of greatest concern in California. Oct, 1999. San Juan Capistrano, CA"
b Hrusa et al., ms later published in Madrono 49(2)61-98. 2002: DISTRIBUTION: NCo; STATUS: extant; NOTES: A Cordyline observed at Salt Point State Park by Hrusa, 1994; identity not yet confirmed.
Initial Editorial Comments author citation uncertain, (G. Forst.) Endl. in International Plant Names Index-APNI, Endl. in IPNI-Index Kewensis, Hook f. in IPNI-Index Kewensis, Nadeaud & Jouan in IPNI-Index Kewensis
Editorial Recommendation author citation to be checked [resolved, at least for the time being]
Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 12 Apr 2004 Interchange Feedback from Campbell O. Webb, Associate Research Scientist, Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, Yale University see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 indicates redwood valleys at Salt Point State Park with thousands of [evidently naturalized] plants 1-4 m tall.
Correspondence 2 24 May 2004 e-mail from John Strother see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 Correspondence 2 provides further evidence that the species may be naturalized in CA, although the locality is described as a "yard" in Alameda Co., and that author of combination is Endlicher (Prodr. Fl. Norfolk. 29. 1833) and not Hook. f.
Correspondence 3 Note from Jeff Greenhouse in treatment submitted for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] by Dale McNeal see Comment 3
Editorial Comments 3 Correspondence 3 indicates: that it may not be possible to determine the correct author citation for Cordyline australis; that TROPICOS has Hook. f., although he (Joseph Dalton Hooker) listed Dracaena australis G. Forst. as basionym, which would make (G. Forst.) Hook. f. the correct citation; that International Plant Names Index has both versions; that the genus is ignored entirely in Flora North America, because none of its members is considered to be naturalized in the area covered; and that the Endlicher name was published first, which would give it priority, except that there is confusion as to what plant that name refers, and as to which species occurs in CA. [Despite the foregoing uncertainties, author citation at least provisionally changed to Cordyline australis (G. Forst.) Endl., from Cordyline australis (G. Forst.) Hook. f. previously in this Index, 29 Aug 2007.]
Correspondence 4 16 Oct 2009 e-mail from James P. Smith see Comment 4
Editorial Comments 4 Correspondence 4 indicates that Cordyline is "alive and well" at locations described as "Eureka" and "the Sonoma County coast"; whether or not the latter is the Salt Point State Park population mentioned under Correspondence 1 is not clear [and the identity of those plants is unconfirmed because they have yet to flower], but in any case it appears that the taxon is occurring and reproducing in +- wild areas in California [and so should be treated as naturalized in the state].
