Source of Report for California
a Munz, P.A. in collaboration with D. D. Keck. 1968, as cited in Kartesz & Meacham
b 1995 memo from Dean Wm. Taylor
Initial Editorial Comments Evidently treated as Montia perfoliata var. utahensis (Rydb.) Munz in Munz, which in turn was treated as synonym of Claytonia parviflora subsp. parviflora in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1]; since Claytonia parviflora subsp. utahensis was indicated for California in protologue, and since The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1] treatment was authored by Chambers, its treatment as synonym in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1] is puzzling; current position of Chambers uncertain, as publication of The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1] and protologue +/- concurrent.
Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 $ 8 Feb 2002, from Margriet Wetherwax see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 indicates that Kenton L. Chambers, The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1] author, made the combination and recognized Claytonia parviflora Hook. subsp. utahensis essentially since The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1], and now includes it for CA.
Correspondence 2 13 May 2003 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 Correspondence 2 indicates that John Miller and Kenton Chambers (The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1] author), in Novon 3:268--273 (1993), recognize populations of Claytonia parviflora outside of CA-FP as Claytonia parviflora subsp utahensis; they also indicated in e-mails to Greenhouse that the California distribution for Claytonia parviflora subsp. utahensis given in TJDM is to be corrected to Teh, DMoj.
Correspondence 3 24 Sep 2004 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 3
Editorial Comments 3 Correspondence 3 indicates that: Claytonia parviflora subsp. utahensis was published by John M. Miller and Kenton Chambers; that Authors of Plant Names has abbreviations for John Miller (1849--1915; J. Mill.) and John M. Miller ( --1796; J. M. Mill.), neither of which is correct for this combination which was made in 1993; and that John M. Mill. is therefore an abbreviation for this John M. Miller that is in accordance with the principles in Authors of Plant Names. [Therefore, author citation corrected to Claytonia parviflora Hook. subsp. utahensis (Rydb.) John M. Mill. & K. L. Chambers, from Claytonia parviflora Hook. subsp. utahensis (Rydb.) J. M. Mill. & K. L. Chambers previously in this Index, 24 Sep 2004.]
Correspondence 4 Treatment and author notes submitted for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] by John M. Miller see Comment 4
Editorial Comments 4 Correspondence 4 indicates that for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] Claytonia parviflora Hook. subsp. utahensis (Rydb.) John M. Mill. & K. L. Chambers is to be recognized and treated as native to CA.
