Information from the Index of California Plant Names (ICPN)
Initial Editorial Analysis 12 Jan 2011
Notes on Authorship of Name all = Authors of Plant Names
Source of Report for California Kartesz & Meacham
Initial Editorial Comments as Chrysothamnus viscidiflorus subsp. stenophyllus (A. Gray) H. M. Hall & Clem., treated as minor variant of Chrysothamnus viscidiflorus (Hook.) Nutt. subsp. viscidiflorus in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1]; author citation uncertain, Chrysothamnus viscidiflorus (Hook.) Nutt. var. stenophyllus (A. Gray) H. M. Hall according to Kartesz & Meacham, but according to Gray Card Index both Chrysothamnus viscidiflorus (Hook.) Nutt. var. stenophyllus (A. Gray) H. M. Hall and Chrysothamnus viscidiflorus (Hook.) Nutt. var. stenophyllus (A. Gray) L. C. Anderson (Great Basin Naturalist 40: 117. 1980). Chrysothamnus viscidiflorus (Hook.) Nutt. var. stenophyllus (A. Gray) H. M. Hall is cited in International Plant Names Index-GCI without reference to protologue. If it were validly published and if it were based on Bigelowia douglasii var. stenophylla A. Gray, Chrysothamnus viscidiflorus (Hook.) Nutt. var. stenophyllus (A. Gray) L. C. Anderson (according to Anderson, based on Bigelovia douglasii var. stenophylla Gray, Proc. Am. Acad. Sci. 8:646. 1873) would be nomenclaturally superfluous and therefore illegitimate. If Chrysothamnus viscidiflorus (Hook.) Nutt. var. stenophyllus (A. Gray) H. M. Hall were never published (indeed, no literature citation is given in IPNI-GCI), then Anderson's name would not be nomenclaturally superfluous, and would therefore be legitimate.

Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 Jun 2000 pers. comm. from Bruce G. Baldwin see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 indicates some or all members of Chrysothamnus might be treated as Ericameria.
Correspondence 2 $ 17 Dec 2001, from Margriet Wetherwax see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 Correspondence 2 confirms that relationships between Chrysothamnus and Ericameria warrant further study, citing Anderson (1995, Great Basin Naturalist 55: 84-88), Nesom & Baird (1995, Phytologia 78:61-65).
Correspondence 3 16 Jul 2002 pers. comm. from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 3
Editorial Comments 3 Correspondence 3 indicates publication of Chrysothamnus viscidiflorus (Hook.) Nutt. var. stenophyllus (A. Gray) H. M. Hall in Compositae of Southern California, UC Publ. Botany 3(1)1-302. 1907. [It is indicated therein that the combination is based on "Bigelowia douglasii stenophylla Gray (Proc. Am. Acad. viii. 646 (1873)", which means that Chrysothamnus viscidiflorus (Hook.) Nutt. var. stenophyllus (A. Gray) L. C. Anderson is nomenclaturally superfluous and therefore illegitimate.]
