| Editorial Comments 2 | Correspondence 2 indicates that: both the number of taxa in Cercis that are represented by plants in North America and the correct name for those taxa are controversial; that evidence from molecular biology (Davis et al, 2002, Systematic Botany) as well as chemistry (Salatino et al, 2000, Biochem Systematics and Ecology) supports recognition, albeit weakly, of two species in North America, Cercis canadensis L. (1753) and Cercis occidentalis A. Gray (1850); that if this taxonomy is accepted, which it is to be in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2], the correct name to be used for the latter is uncertain, owing primarily to the fact that A. Gray, in describing C. occidentalis, designated two type specimens, one from California and the other from TX; that different workers have accepted one or the other of these specimens as the type, resulting in different "correct names" for the species; that if the specimen from TX is selected as the type for Cercis occidentalis, then that name would apply only to the plants in TX, and Cercis orbiculata Greene (1912) would have to be used for the plants in CA; and that since the choice for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] is that the California specimen is the type, the correct name for the plants in California is Cercis occidentalis, with Cercis orbiculata as a later synonym. | |||||
