| Editorial Comments 1 | Correspondence 1 indicates: that Ceanothus laevigatus DC. was published in 1825 (Prodromus Systematis Naturalis Regni Vegetabilis 2:30. 1825); that Hooker, in a later publication (Flora Boreali-Americana 1:125. 1831) published the illegitimate later homonym Ceanothus laevigatus Douglas, attributing the description to "Douglas, MSS."; that Ceanothus velutinus var. laevigatus Torr. & A. Gray was published in A flora of North America 1:686 (1840), referencing the illegitimate Ceanothus laevigatus Douglas as a synonym; that ICBN (2006) Art. 58.1 specifies that the Torrey & Gray name is a legitimate nom. nov. dating from 1840, in that when Marshall C. Johnston (M. C. Johnst. in Authors of Plant Names) published Ceanothus velutinus var. hookeri "nom. nov." (Leaflets of Western Botany 10:64. 1963), he cited Ceanothus velutinus var. laevigatus Torr. & A. Gray (A flora of North America 1:686. 1840) as a synonym, and, in so doing, Johnston disregarded the ICBN (1961) Art. 72 (currently rephrased as Art. 58.1) which defined Torrey & Gray's combination as a legitimate comb. nov.; and that, therefore, Ceanothus velutinus var. hookeri M. C. Johnst. is superfluous and Ceanothus velutinus var. laevigatus Torr. & A. Gray is the correct name. | |||||
