Editorial Comments 1 | Correspondence 1 indicates that the authorship of this name was extensively discussed several years ago "among Werner Greuter, Dan Nicolson, John McNeill, John Strother & myself [Gandhi]" and it was decided that because Torrey & A. Gray included "Rhamnus ? cuneatus Hook." as a syn, it should be considered the basionym of a new combination by Nutt., yielding Ceanothus cuneatus (Hook.) Nutt. [According to ICBN (Vienna Code), "Art. 36.1(a) -- 36.1. A name is not validly published (a) when it is not accepted by the author in the original publication; -- does not apply to names published with a question mark or other indication of taxonomic doubt, yet accepted by their author.", so that the question mark is of no consequence, if it is interpreted that Rhamnus cuneatus was accepted by Nuttall despite his having put one (a question mark) after part of the name. The issue then becomes a matter of choosing which is more significant, the quoted description from Nuttall, or the inclusion of "Rhamnus ? cuneatus Hook." by Torrey & A. Gray. Evidently, Gandhi and others consider the latter to be more significant, and have decided on Ceanothus cuneatus (Hook.) Nutt., even though it is not certain, without seeing his manuscript, that Nuttall had anything to do with making the combination in Ceanothus, so that resolution of this issue seems to be largely a matter of opinion, and in addition there appears to be more that could be learned about the facts involved. Nevertheless, in the interest of conforming to the position taken by Gandhi and others, and thereby removing this issue from everybody's list of things to resolve, author citation changed [back] to Ceanothus cuneatus (Hook.) Nutt., from Ceanothus cuneatus Nutt. previously in this Index, 27 Sep 2013.] | |||||
