Initial Editorial Comments "Plants from the San Bernardino Mountains in southern California are similar to C. pityophila in habit, leaf morphology, and perigynia number per pistillate spike; their perigynia have more prominent veins, suggesting that they may be more closely related to C. globosa. All western montane taxa warrant much closer scrutiny." in Flora North America treatment by Peter W. Ball & A. A. Reznicek. The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] (and The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1]) treatment by Joy Mastrogiuseppe. [Flora North America treatment leaves open the possibility that Carex pityophila Mack. some day will be used for California plants, but until that time exclusion from The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1] will stand, pending treatment for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2].]
